How to Conquer Imposter Syndrome

Yesterday evening, my friend Jess, who's just landed her dream role called me. Yet, instead of celebrating, she's panicking: "I don't belong here. They're going to realise soon enough."

Sound familiar?

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering when everyone else will discover you're secretly just winging it, congratulations, you're human.

Imposter syndrome is a universal experience, but it doesn't have to rule your career (or your life). Here’s how to beat those nagging feelings and regain your confidence:

1. Acknowledge and Accept
First things first: admit you're experiencing imposter syndrome. Saying, "I'm feeling out of my depth," isn't defeat, it's awareness. Recognising the feeling means you can address it head-on.

2. List Your Wins (Big and Small)
Imposter syndrome thrives on self-doubt. Counteract this by keeping a running list of your accomplishments, no victory is too minor. Did you lead a project successfully, solve a tricky problem, or help someone else out? Write it down. Seeing your achievements laid out boosts your confidence and reminds you that you've earned your place.

3. Share Your Feelings (Yes, Really)
Talk openly with trusted colleagues, mentors or friends. You'll quickly realise you're not alone, many of your heroes likely felt the same at some point. Vulnerability isn't weakness; it’s strength.

4. Shift Your Mindset to Growth
Instead of fearing mistakes, embrace them as stepping stones for growth. Remember, every successful person was once a beginner. Approach new challenges as opportunities to learn rather than tests to pass.

5. Visualise Success
Visualisation isn't just for athletes!! It's a powerful tool for calming nerves. Before tackling something daunting, spend a few minutes picturing it going incredibly well. Feel the confidence. Own the moment. This simple trick primes your brain for success.

6. Create Your Personal Pep Talk
Develop a go-to affirmation or mantra. Something as simple as, β€œI am capable, prepared and I belong here,” can anchor you when self-doubt creeps in. Repeat as necessary until it sinks in.

Finally, remember, imposter syndrome often signals growth. If you're feeling it, you're likely pushing your boundaries, and that's exactly how greatness happens.

You've got this. Trust me, you're doing better than you think.
